Video Recording System Detection
Detection of covert video recording systems, unauthorized CCTV installations, and multi-camera surveillance networks.
Wireless video surveillance devices transmit on Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz), proprietary 1.2 GHz analog bands, or cellular networks. Each transmission type requires different detection methodology. Empire Investigation's wireless video detection uses broadband spectrum analysis to identify active video streams, Wi-Fi network scanning for IP cameras broadcasting on local networks, and 1.2 GHz-specific scanning for analog wireless cameras commonly used in lower-cost covert setups.
Video recording systems — as distinct from transmitting cameras — capture and store footage locally without any wireless signal. These are the most challenging to detect because they produce no electromagnetic signature. Detection relies entirely on optical lens scanning, physical inspection, and NLJD detection of electronic components. Empire Investigation's sweep protocol addresses all three with equal rigor.
What Makes Recording Systems Different
A complete covert recording system is more than a single camera — it may include a DVR or NVR unit, power supply infrastructure, network connectivity, and multiple cameras connected to a central recording device. These systems can provide continuous surveillance of an entire property and are often significantly harder to detect than individual devices due to their distributed nature.
How Complete Systems Are Identified
Identifying a complete surveillance system requires not just finding cameras but also locating the central recording unit, power infrastructure, and any data transmission components. Our sweep methodology is designed to identify the full system architecture — not just visible cameras — to ensure complete documentation of the surveillance threat.
What We Look For
- Centralized DVR or NVR units hidden within a property
- Power infrastructure supporting covert camera networks
- Multi-camera installations covering multiple areas
- Remote monitoring configurations with off-site access
- Covert CCTV systems disguised as legitimate security installations
