Detection and removal of magnetically attached GPS tracking devices on personal, executive, and commercial vehicles.

GPS tracking devices fall into three operational categories, each requiring different detection approaches.

Active trackers transmit location data in real time via cellular networks. They generate a cellular RF signal detectable by spectrum analyzers when actively transmitting, and require power — either from a battery or from the vehicle's electrical system.

Passive trackers log location data internally with no transmission whatsoever. They are completely invisible to RF detection and must be found through physical inspection and magnetic detection of the device's internal components.

Hardwired trackers draw power from the vehicle's electrical system (OBD port, fuse box, battery terminals) and may be either active or passive. They have no battery to die and can operate indefinitely. They require inspection of wiring runs and power access points in addition to external physical inspection.

Why Magnetic Trackers Are So Prevalent

The combination of extreme ease of placement, low cost, and high effectiveness makes magnetic GPS trackers the dominant form of unauthorized vehicle surveillance. A strong rare-earth magnet allows these devices to remain securely attached at highway speeds in virtually any weather condition. A motivated individual can attach a tracker to a target vehicle in a parking lot within seconds without attracting attention.

Magnetic Tracker Placement Patterns

Research into discovered tracker cases shows strong placement patterns. Wheel wells — particularly the rear wheel wells — are the most common location due to ease of access from a crouching position, strong metal surface for magnetic attachment, and protection from direct observation. The undercarriage near the spare tire, inside bumper cavities, and near exhaust shields are also frequently used.
